Did you rotate the planting area.Crops need rotation on a yearly basis.
My thought too: crop rotation is often the key to successful production.
Fertilize with Nitrogen. Corn will take it all out of the soil.
grow two plots. 1 beans, any legume, and 1 corn. Switch every year.
