A salad buffet for the deer- How can I stop deer from eating my hosta?

What can I do about the deer feasting on my hostas? They literally destroyed the hydrangea plant I 'babied' for almost 4 years, and chewed my hostas to stubs typecast two years. :( I live in a developed area, and don't want or support the installation of a tree stand.

That's sooo annoying!!! Try sprinkling soap shaving around your hostas, it keeps the deer from nibbling. Just remember to replace the shavings after it rains.

spray them with a water/tobacco sauce mixture. Safe for the plant and the deer hate it.

Deer rely heavily on their sense of smell try adding some strongly scented herbs like garlic and chives, mint pr lavender it can mask the appealing aroma of nearby annuals. just an FYI mint can spread quickly and rapidly and take over other potential plants if not watched carefully.

Liquid fence is the only thing that works for me. I have tried hair cuttings and every other remedy and it is the only thing that works. You must apply once a week for 3 weeks and then monthly. It's a pain but worth it.

    Marigolds might help

another deer repellent is to whiz an egg and water in the blender and strain into a spray bottle. Spritz the plants and around the area in the evening to ward off the deer, and refresh after it rains. You can add cayenne pepper or garlic to the mix but I've always had good luck with just the egg. Deer hate the smell of eggs for some reason. Keep the bottle in a shady or cool place and it will stay "good" for quite a while.

Probably better to plant something they don't like. I tried and tried, there was nothing to keep the deer from the hosta. I moved them to our backyard which is fenced.

Light mist of neem oil and they say if you can plant Lavender in front of them , they won't cross the lavender to eat other things.

squirts of dish soap blend until all liquid strain then put in sprayer and spray

not much you can do about deer or elk eating plants. You could fence that part off maybe. I live in a very rural area and have the same problem.

Moth balls, and remember to replace them after a rain, Animals do not care for the scent of Moth Balls. It will not harm pets, as they will stay away also.

Please don't do this. Moth balls are carcinogenic & that "nasty" smell is cancer causing as well. Also if they are used outside & get wet, the poison in them will leach into your ground water & it never goes away. Please figure out some other alternative.

You are going to have to either replace them with something else or fence in your yard. There is nothing that will stop a hungry deer. We replaced all our hostas with ferns since the deer won't eat those. I even bought "deer resistant" plants and they still munched on many of those. Any spray, food, repellant, etc may work for a bit, but a day will come that it will wear off before you realize it and that night the deer will get to the plants before you do with more repellant. :(

The deer used to feast on my veggie garden and munch my tulips to the ground but then I found Milorganite fertilizer. It is a true miracle for me! I live in the country surrounded by pastures and forests so the deer are plentiful but still love to come by for a visit often. The owner of the local feed and seed store recommended the Milorganite to me several years ago and I have not had one chewed tulip or veggie since! It is a strong fertilizer used on golf courses, not intended for use in gardens so you must use it correctly!! Sprinkle AROUND the area you wish to protect, NOT in the flower bed or garden! I sprinkle about once a month during peak growing season here in my zone 7 and the Bambis have left my plants alone. My tulips and veggies thank me, yours will too. Lowes also carries Milorganite.

Deer do not like sage, plant some of that with your hostas.
