Pack anything you do not need on a daily basis. Books, decorative items, out of season clothes, china, crystal, serving pieces, anything and everything. Leave just what you must have on a daily basis, few changes of clothes, medicine, bathroom items, couple cups, plates and a pot and pan and crockpot. This is when grilling every meal can come in handy. Or do stuff easily prepared in a crockpot to save time, money and space. Wrap well and label every box and its contents if possible. That way when you arrive at your new home you can find your items more easily. If you need help, enlist friends and family and have a packing party.
I've made many a military move. Finally got it down to a science. My Husband is very particular and wanted everything Ship Shape ASAP. And He was not on hand to help.
I learned that they do a total switch out at the White House in a single day when the new President takes up residence. If you think about it and have a plan it quite doable. In comparison, My little household is no big deal.
I print out inventory lists and Numbers on different colored paper for each box, closet, room and or person. There are just my husband son and myself. Then I attach them to the boxes and also label the furniture by color code. I have a sample floor plan and label that. I make sure to launder all the towels, bed spreads, curtains etc. before the move. We also purge all the clutter. There are lots of organizations who will come and pick up your donations for free. When the movers come to pack up, I make sure I am the one to seal the boxes. and the rooms are packed up in the van in order as much as possible. The Kitchen is the last room packed and the first one unloaded. When we arrive at our new location I post the floor plan and put the appropriate color of paper with room or family member names and all the furniture and boxes get placed where they belong. Each family member is assigned a duty station and are responsible for placing furniture and unpacking. I am usually blessed to have military spouses offer (or be assigned by their husbands)to help with the unpacking and furniture arranging, makeing beds, unpacking linens etc. It actually goes very quickly as we tend to be minimalists. I take the kitchen and we are almost back to normal by the end of the day. Do I cook, No Way! Order Pizza for our helpers to take home. We go out for a nice meal and when we come "home" and open the door, it's almost like we've always been there just a slightly different floor plan. Everything is fresh and quite welcoming.
With a little planning your move can be well orchestrated. Even if it''s not perfect by the end of the day it usually passed inspection. We usually have a BBQ on the weekend to meet and greet our new neighbors and give thanks for their help.
Hope this helps, Happy Fresh Start.
Pack the kitchen last it should be 1st off the truck. Pretend you are going camping. Pack 3days worth of meals. Clip coupons for pizza deals. most movers won't take flammable or arasol cans. Those have to go by passenger car. Get a list from the moving company of what else they won't take. Have a sketch of your new floor plan label the rooms on the floor plan and mark the boxes going to that room the same as on the floor plan .
last on/first off = definitely your bed and bedding , a couple of mugs , tea bags/coffee etc. and kettle. you can always eat out or get take away and sit on the floor but you need to be able to collapse in bed with a hot drink and face things the following morning .
I also number those boxes 1 of 50, so you can be sure at your destination all the boxes got off-loaded. Each box also has contents and room to go to. Hang a sign next to each room that corresponds with box names when you are at new place. I insist the movers put them in the right room stacked with contents facing outward. My preferred boxes are apple boxes or other fruit boxes that are very sturdy with handles. Second best wine boxes. I talk to my market guy and liquor store to save for me and go every couple days to pick up. Don't wait til weekend they will be gone.
I always put my mattress in a bag or zip vinyl mattress cover. Last client move I put rachet straps around front and back of mattress to haul up the 4 flights of stairs in client's new apartment that made it a breeze since we had something to hang onto.
First thing I like to set up at new place is beds and make the beds, don't know when your gonna need a nap. Then towels and TP in bedroom.
Then I like the couch set up and hook up the TV, dvd player, cable or antenna.
Then get the cool drinks in frig, coffee tea and sugar put out. I usually send someone to either Subway or Pizza parlor to get lunch for everyone including movers, and cold drinks. Makes everyone much more agreeable.
Count boxes before movers leave.
