Makeup and hair tools organization?

Question

I'm redoing my bathroom and having a little trouble deciding how to store my makeup and hair tools. My bathroom is quite small so I don't have much room for organizing. I do have shelves above my toilet and a LITTLE counter space.

I wanted to do the PVC project for my hair tools but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Any help?

(I am also planning on painting the vanity black and getting new hardware for it!)

Instead of open shelves, you could buy a good sized cabinet and mount it over the toilet to hold supplies, as well as adding a medicine cabinet on the wall to the left of your doorway (if there's not one there already). Just those 2 pieces might solve your storage problem. Good luck with your project!

I know people hate them, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. I love the newer over the toilet stand up cabinets. The have space with closed doors and shelves...that are normally so cluttered...but with all the reasonably priced bins available at almost every store, coordinate your colors and go for one. It is the best bang for the buck. Or look for a short bookcase you can attach to the wall with 'L' brackets and then use baskets!

Before you paint the vanity black look at Rustoleums Expresso color which is almost black and it looks great in bathroom renovations (did several vanities in it for people). Plus with the colors in your tile and your walls, expresso will blend the room together with the vanity and tub color. I love black but sometimes it can be a harsh color and especially in bathrooms. You have shelves for behind the toilet which could use some nice baskets to hide a multitude of things and look great. If baskets are not in your budget, then cover boxes in fabric and instant glam. As for the vanity, what is stored in there? Use one side for cleaning supplies (put them in a plastic tote/bin for any spills and keep clutter to a minimum and the other side delegate to larger things you cannot hide in the box/baskets on the shelves. do the drawers work? If so, then get plastic bins from the dollar tree or small boxes from checks, candy, etc to use as dividers for make up. Use the top of the vanity with a pretty glass for toothpaste and tooth brush. and maybe even a pretty box for hairbrush and earrings. I would have the shelves go from about 6-8' above back of toilet to 12'down from the ceiling. Do you have a mirror? If you took down the plain frameless mirror then go to Lowe's or Home Depot and have someone there help you cut trim/molding to frame the mirror. Off to the left of the vanity is there room for a narrow shelf? (I have glass shelf for my perfume and earrings which works great). Good luck!

Just a word of caution for you about that chair~you need to glue the support back in before something happens. LOL

Another option would be to store supplies under the sink. You could put your makeup in a zip up travel bag with handles and pull it out when you need it. It will all depend on how much stuff you have. I use a basket under my sink for all of my hair products and just reach under to grab whatever I need. My curling iron and hair dryer and stored down there, too, so I only pull out what I need at a particular time. Let me know if you have other questions!

You probably would have to bite the bullet and call an electrician, but I'd have a 2gang outlet installed behind the drawers. You can put your hair stuff in there, plugged in. I actually ran a power strip along the inside of the drawer, into which I plug my stuff, including my electric toothbrush charger. Get stuff off the counter. One of the better decisions I made in my bathroom.

Another weird one was I connected my 2 vanities with a kitchen 9' spice pull-out. I don't have medicine cabinets, and this extra space is great. Could you find one to go with your vanity and attach something like that on either end?

Looks as though you have a good amount of space under your vanity along with one drawer so with the right 'tools' you have plenty of space.
Look for dividers for the drawer or even make custom dividers using balsa wood found in craft stores. 
I like using long narrow trays underneath sinks for easy access to items in the back since they easily slide in and out. If you decide to put your make-up there I'd recommend the small desktop style mini drawers. They come in three to five drawer versions. They are stackable which allows you to utilize more of the 'air' space. 
For the shelves over your potty I agree that covered boxes, or baskets is the way to go.

I just saw the neatest idea and cheap for storage in the bathroom, straw baskets! Put on the wall in different sizes and holds a lot of stuff! Picture it. Everyone has baskets!

You can use a fairly small shelf and drill holes with a hole saw to slide your hair appliances into. Make the hole just big enough for the barrel part, but not the handle to go through, kind of like the board is a holster. This works great, your stuff is easily accessible and off the counter. I don't see a mirror over your sink, you could put in a medicine cabinet and use that for your make up. You can either have it go between the studs or hang out on the wall completely. Medicines don't do well in the heat and humidity of a bathroom anyway.

I have one of those drawer bin thingys you see for storing screws and stuff. I keep my barrettes, bobby pins, clips, deodorant, etc. in there, under the sink. On the other side under the sink I have two pull out drawer things stacked for my curlers, ribbons, hair pieces, etc. I don't keep bathroom cleaning supplies in my bathroom. I have them in a carry tote with other cleaning items that I can take room to room and they get stored in the laundry area, one less thing in the bathroom.

Think UP! Put a shelf OVER the door frame to keep extra TP. We use the coated wire kind so there is no place for condensation to gather. I have two pieces of flat plastic drilled with holes to hang my earrings in/through, they each have a metal loop at the top and are hung from hooks. Since I have a cat box in my bathroom I also have a broom hanging behind my bathroom door for quick scattered litter clean ups.

Use 3M Command hooks, one upright and one upside-down on the inside of your vanity and wrap the cords of your hair tools around them. Put them about 6-8' apart vertically. It saves a lot of room. Or use a magazine binder to hold them. Also, lazy susan turntables on the bottom of the vanity are great for organizing your stuff. You could also install some baskets, wicker or wire, on the wall and it would be decorative and functional. That idea is all over Pinterest.

I used a wall planter to round up my hair tools. I don't have a lot of makeup but what I do have fits into a little travel case under the sink. I used stacked glassware pieces to hold facial cleanser and dental items.

take a thin strip of wood (trim or modding) add hooks and put on wall for hair dryer and irons. use a fruit basket to put makeup and hair ties....i use the three tier ones they are great to hang down from ceiling.

try plastic bins on one cabinet door for have stuff and one of those small jewelry holders(that look like shoe storage only smaller) on the other cabinet toor for makeup.  Because the are clear you can see what is in the pockets.  You can use command hook to attach the bins and jewelry holder to the inside of the cabinet doors.  It looks like you have one drawer in the sink cabinet that you can get divider or small containers/bins for tiny items.  The only other thing I can suggest I'd to have an electrician install an outlet under the cabinet or in the drawer.  I live with one outlet in my bathroom so I am always switching plugs around.

I hung a clear shoe bag storage pockets behind the door and have all my lotions, potions, brushes, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc and if I have company that may have to use the room, the over door hooks have notches that I can hang a bath towel over the whole thing. I have another one hanging on the back door for gloves, hats and scarves.

Hi Allison, a wall mount cabinet would work wonders for you and a cute basket on the countertop as well. You also have room for a few open shelves.
