I do not know what the finish is, but it is wood. I was purchased several year ago by my mother
I used an antique or disdressed kit. Easy and came out great. Got on line amazon
You can make your own chalk paint: Mix 1/2 Cup of warm water with 1/2 Cup Plaster of Paris then blend with 1 1/2 Cup of paint. Ensure that the furniture piece is clean and free of dirt or dust, apply chalk paint with a brush. Allow ample drying time prior to applying wax or, wipe on polyurethane. (your choice) Best of luck.
For first timers with chalk paint - I tell them to go to Walmart and buy the Waverly brand in the craft department. Lots of color options and it is only $6 a bottle - a little goes a long way too! They have the wax for finishing it too or you can put water-based poly.
I have used Annie Sloan, Lowe's & Menard's chalk paint-like Lowe's & Menard's much better and cheaper too! Only thing I now do differently is use polyurethane (preferably spray) to seal the piece especially if it needs to withstand some wear. Waxing requires repeat coats about every 6 months and is not nearly as durable. Trust me I have made that mistake & regret it!
i love to chalk paint furniture. May I ask what your painting? I've used rustoleum from lowes, Annie Sloa, and made my own. They all work well If you use a chalk paint you can normally skip priming. If any gloss is on the piece your painting id lightly sand off the gloss and clean well and start painting.
here is a piece I used homemade chalk paint on
this is also homemade chalk paint
this was painted with Annie Sloan paint
