    Leather? Fabric? These are hard to recover. If you cannot make a slip cover(s) you make need to have it professionally recovered. If leather, use a good conditioner and live with the "worn" look.

    if the stuffing and frame are solid. and you are dealing with worn or torn leather, you could stick on "patches of similar colored leather to make it look intentional. Get thin leather pieces online. Stick on with a glue made to repair leather car seats. Get online or in store that sells car parts. I would make the patches similar size and shape, pick one, and place them on the chair before glueing to see if they look like you might like. Look at them overnight as there is no going back once you glue.

    Now, if its fabric, get some paint and fabric medium from the craft store or a product called gesso and pInt away.

    You could use leather paint or if fabric use fabric paint. The process does not leave the fabric rough.
