An inexpensive way is to lay down newspaper, several layers thick, and the put a layer of grass clippings several inches thick. Or to save money when applying purchased mulch, start with the newspaper layer and then added just enough mulch to cover the paper and you'll save money by not needing a thick layer of store bought mulch.

Your best bet if these are already established gardens is to use the newspapers first and cover with a few inches of mulch.

Use Weed and Feed, on your lawn, as well. Tho, remember, this also depends on IF your neighbors care for their lawn as well. If they do NOT care, and the winds come, well, you will get their weed seeds, and this will take over. This is a major factor. If you use Weed and Feed, this will help, but be alert to new weeds coming up, and pull them up by the root, and they will not come back. On face book, you can find a spray that you can put on this area, tho I don't have room to put it here. Best wishes, J.

What about if you have a groundcover that spreads, like ice plant? How do you keep the weeds out of there? And how can you keep the weeds down where your plant can still spread without killing it
