it is likely Formica not melamine, there are paints available for Formica, just research this at a good paint department. Go for it!

Before they came out with high adhesive paint to be used on melamine I would take a palm sander and scuff up the surface of the melamine and use regular latex paint over top. You just have to take the slick surface off for the latex to get a grip on it!
Google Rustoleum's Transformations line. They have both Furniture and Cabinet Transformation kits in both light and dark finishes. It adheres well to just abut any surface, including formica if that's what you have. Very little prep involved, but the best part is no sanding.
