First remove the clutter. Go shopping at resale stores and come up with something like a large colorful bowl or something of interest that fits your decor. Leave most of island empty
I agree with what Eileen said, except I'd say "shop" in your house first. You might find something in another room that would be perfect for the space.
Its is a little hard to explain how to with the clutter on the count term.Maybe take that off and send another photo and explain exactly what you would like to accomplish with decorating.
Clutter is going to collect somewhere, because it's human nature to drop your keys, etc in the closest available space. That's why I'd suggest you think about a dedicated spot for that stuff while you're planning your island makeover. Starting with a clean slate always helps!
