I think you're right when you say its your own taste. A lot of people feel strongly one way or another, but i say listen to what you like. Best of luck!
If the wood is in good shape, I say don't paint. There are wood treatment and restoration products available at big box hardware stores that will do wonders for older wood pieces. I have a 1960's maple BR set, maple cabinets in the kitchen, and cherry in the DR or what's left of it after the ceiling fell in from a flooded bathroom above.
If the structure is good then I would keep it the natural wood and just clean it up.
give it a good cleaning first.....Murphy oil soap works for me. Is the piece solid wood or veneered? Check for chipping...if it is chipped ...fill in the area with a wood filler. Sand smooth after it drys. Then paint the piece. If the piece is intact....strip and refinish after you verify the piece is not a "rare antique". There is a difference between old and antique. Check with a refinishing shop...the owner is probly the one who would know.
To me, the richness of a desk, is to be saved. You can always redo this, and take off the finish, and restain it. . but not paint it. Tho, this is totally up to you. If you are tired of the stain, or finish, you can change the tint to a diff one. . by just removing the stain, and changing the tint. Just ask a Lowe's person, about the steps to take, and make sure the windows are open. Stay safe, J.
Can you add a picture of it?
If it is in good condition after a good cleaning, I would leave the wood with it's natural beauty.
