Flour, baking powder, cornstarch, etc., immediately goes into the freezer. Anything in a paper box gets transferred into airtight containers. I had a pantry moth infestation about 3 years ago and was a long expensive procedure to fix, not to mention hundreds of dollars in lost food. Takes a few extra minutes when returning home from shopping, but so worth it for you family's health and well being.
Like Naomie Moore (above), I also freeze flour, oats, graham wafer crumbs, nuts, etc.
Leaving any food open is an invitation to an investation of many kinds of critters, plus formula is a lot more expensive than flour in our area. Like several posters before me, I highly recommend putting the flour in either your freezer or sealed containers. If the flour has the egg of these little critters when purchased freezing it will kill the egg.
I am right now in the throes of an infestation of these hateful little buggers, Trying to rid the house of cardboard boxes, and bags. Will try glass jars to store in. What about plastic jars(Empty cleaned mayo jars, pickle jars, etc?) They have nice screw on lids and I actually have dozens already cleaned and stored.
I have containerized everything, even pasta since living in Texas in the eighties. I haven't had trouble with the little beadles or moths, even living in Florida for five years I didn't have trouble. I swear Florida is a magnet for every bug known to man. I use mainly the thicker plastic storage containers, other thinner ones sometimes make things like Chow Mein noodles stale quicker. I actually put them in glass. The containers can be labeled and stacked easier than bags and look nicer on the shelf. Not having boxes or bags in the cupboards make things easier to find.
