How do you fix stubborn drywall seams that keep cracking in old homes?

Good morning. I just did this to a seam in our home that kept magically appearing. First, cut/slice a V groove into the drywall. If it's where two pieces connect use the tape that has the little squares. (Cut it so that it barely covers the new opening to avoid a hump.) If it's on just the beam it's screwed into, just mud it.

Anyway, the advice given to me was to give the old drywall a new place to grab and hold the new patching. Use fresh drywall compound and add thin layers until it's level with the rest of the wall/ceiling. Mine worked wonders.
