Should we remove our butterfly bush?

It is about 12 feet tall with white flowers. It attracts lots of hummingbirds, birds, bees and butterflies. I recently read that it is invasive. We live in Southern California.

Transplanting should be done before flowering or after finished flowering.

I have several butterfly bushes (Ohio). While I do see a plant shoot up here and there (not often), I just dig them out. Some I've planted in other areas and a few I given to others. They are certainly not a problem like my neighors trumpet vine that I can't get out my yard, or morning glories from the other neighbor. (My butterfly bushes haven't spread to their yards). It doesn't sound like you've seen any off shoots yet. So just enjoy and keep an eye out.

  • I so agree with Wyldecent . . . Your bush is happy and healthy right where it is - leave it alone and enjoy it! I would love to have one but just to darn hot on my property . . . You are lucky!

You can also trim it back after blooming so seed heads do not form. Butterfly bushes will grow back even after a severe trim. We do have them reseed in our yard, but they are easy enough to dig up and throw away or share with another gardener.

I would trim it down to a size that you can reach and when it grows back dead head the flowers. I've had one for a bout 5 years and haven't found a sprout that I didn't plant myself.

Agreed. Why remove such wonderful habitat if its not spreading.

Thanks to both Jane and Inetia for your replies, Jane you said it has white flowers and Inetia's photo shows purple flowers, I'm going to assume it can have either colour ?

It looks similar to a plant I have seen a few years ago (when I lived in Melbourne) I believe it's called Santana and is classed as a noxious weed in Victoria, I noticed that when I moved to Adelaide that nurseries here sell it as a garden plant (amazing that what is classified as a noxious weed in one state is sold as a garden plant in another state!).
