How about putting drainage holes and plant some colorful annuals.
I see a beautiful table centerpiece. Large enough to line with mason jars for a flower arrangement. Or, you could do a beautiful artificial flower arrangement that changes with the seasons. Could also be use to store crafting items with box or glass jars as dividers. Personally, I would not want to disturb the essence of the piece by altering or painting it.
I am with Pat, display or use without changing. I see it on a mantle with a bunch of spring flowers and twigs. In a craft room to hold small tools or colored markers and pencils in mason jars. In a bathroom holding towels and soaps, the possibilities are endless. So lucky you have this! ☺
A fitting tribute might be to use it as a handy tote around the house for YOUR tools :)
I do see a fabulous planter!
Find some jars to fit inside and put your cutlery in it. Easy to tote them outside for summer entertaining, or leave on counter. Do NOT touch the wood. Leave it as it is.
Roll napkins and fill it, tea towels. Hand towels in the bathroom.
