I use news paper. The ink in the paper works very well. When you plant just dig a hole, mold the paper into the hole. Put your plant on top of the paper, add your soil. Put at least 3 layers of paper.
Line with heavy landscape fabric top with newspaper and then regular mulch.
Weeds will turn up even if you use good quality landscape fabric. At this point they are shallow rooted and easily plucked out with minimal effort.
Spray them with white vinegar.
