yes sew ends together i use about two inch thick pieces 4 if i want it thicker hope i helped you
It really depends on how big a hook you want to use and how dense, and what pattern. Any width will do if the pattern is small enough.
Barbra is right, it depends on what you're going for, my first rug was made with one inch strips and didn't provide a lot of heft or cushion, I used two inch strips and it was much better, three inch and larger were much more difficult but gave a much looser and thicker rug.
