My departed wife took care of our flowers and bushes. i recall she cut back the rose bushes each year to about a foot high. Now the bush is head high and still producing beautiful roses. Should I fool with it?

No it will best best to wait until they have stopped flowering for the season. Sorry for your loss.

It's best to do that hard pruning in the winter when it's dormant. You can prune it back some after blooming to contain it until next winter. Prune to an outside bud.

Rule of thumb is......if it blooms in the spring you prune it in the fall. If it blooms in the summer you prune it in the spring. And I'm very sorry for your loss.

First and foremost, I am sorry for your loss. I live in Ontario Canada. So what zone you live in will depend on how and when to trim roses. Roses after the bloom is finished should be dead headed, (sorry for the terminology)prune the flowers when they are finished blooming. In the spring I cut back any dead branches or anything that may look like it carries any disease. You want to "open" up the bush to provide an opportunity for new growth. Use sharp shears and cut at a 45 degree angle. Cut at about an inch above an outward facing bud. You may also wish to see if you have a local horticultural society. They can perhaps provide tips for trimming in your area.
