Does anyone have air plants? I'm looking for some creative decor.

I've looked at different sites, Pinterest, etc. and there are many great ideas. But I trust my Hometalk DIY friends to come up with the best of the best.

I have lots of air plants, have them hanging in different shapes blown glass terrarium with small decorative rocks in the bottom and small pieces of curly wood found at Hobby Lobby. Have them hanging by twine in my double kitchen window. Over my sink I have them nestled into old glass electric pole insulators again hung with twine rope from the dollar store. You could put a little colored sand in the bottom of a martini glass and put them in that. I also have some sitting in sea urchin shells, and hermit crab shells u can buy at craft stores. Small 2-3 inch pottery vases can be found on Etsy pretty cheap that mine also sit in. Make sure u soak your plants once a week for an hour or two or twice a week for 30 minutes then let dry upside down for about 4 hours before u put them back in their display. Eventually you will be rewarded with more air plant babies called pups. When they get about 1/3 of the size of the parent plant you can gently pull them off, and u have some to share or add to your collection. Almost all will bloom once in their lifetime before producing their "pups". Have fun, be creative, I've even seen them displayed on wooden candle sticks.

Wow. I didn't realize they could be used in so many places. I guess they don't need anything but air and water. Will I have to worry about sun exposure? I can't put them in the windows of my apartment because of the cat. I already looked into toxicity for pets and they are safe.....but she will destroy them in a heartbeat. I have some beautiful shells that were given to me and I'm look forward to using some of them. I'd love t hang them but I think I'm going to incorporate the shells into a wall decor so I can keep them safe from the kitty. You have given me so many ideas of possibilities. Thank you.

Hi Nancy, actually they don't like direct sun, just a bright room south or west facing, I even have some hanging that just get morning sun. I know what u mean about the kitties. I lost a few in the beginning to my cat thinking they were a toy to swat around, and no not toxic because one of the dogs chewed on one after the cat played with it for a while.😁 They will look awesome in shells! Good luck, have fun, and your welcome!
