I would prep the canvas first with gesso, or use latex paint. Get it really smooth. Or just get a piece of foam core, glue it onto canvas then add the poster using spray glue. They sell 8' x 4' sheets of foam core. You could just use the foam core to the wall too, just add velcro to the back and wall, its incredibly light.
Then apply a thin even coat of spray glue and add your poster. Squeegee it on to remove bubbles as you go, going to take a few sets of hands. Might want to practice before you do the real thing.
I've used mod podge with success. Just be sure to continue to smooth out any air pockets.

I did the same thing for the same reason. I had a wood frame from an old picture and made a wood frame insert (much like your canvas frame) and used fabric as the "poster". If you use the poster decopage it on the canvas, easing out the air bubbles. Use small hinges on the side of the new picture to open and reveal the breaker box.
