What can I do to keep birds away from my fish pond?
There are some squirrel proof bird feeders out there that you can purchase. You can also make your own squirrel defender! Like this Hometalker did- http://www.hometalk.com/diy/grow/the-defeeder-make-your-hanging-bird-feeder-squirrel-proof-11554932
The DEFEEDER - Make Your Hanging Bird Feeder Squirrel Proof.
My husband bought a 10' 2 inch PVC pipe to hang our feeders on. We then attached plant hanger hooks to hold the feeders. To keep squirrels from reaching the feeders he put a metal baffle just below the feeders. The squirrels can't get around the baffle to the feeders. It's also a little difficult (not impossible) for them to climb the PVC.
Squirrels love bird seed! There are many bird feeders sold these days that are touted as 'Squirrel Proof', but many times, they will come up with some way to get at the birdseed. They cannot always climb on metal, or get a good footing on it, so that usually helps deter them.
We hung ours on a metal hook plant hanger sticking in the ground and they have a shield that you can buy at Lowes and put on the hanger so squirrels can't get up/ costs about $17.00 but well worth it to see them trying and can't get up ha ha. It worked for us
# 1 Attach a "slinky" the the top of the pole, pole through middle of slinky, under the feeder and let it hang to the ground. The squirrel can't get past the slinky!
# 2 Smear some heavy grease on the pole from feeder to the ground, squirrel will slide down every time he tries to climb pole. Will have to be re-done occasionally, sure is funny watching them try to get to the feeder!
if your bird feeder is on a pole, a slinky attached to the plie works well in keeping them off.
