If you cut it all the way to the ground, it will not come back. Leave blossoms for the summer, cutting spent blossoms as they die.
I have read that you can cut back stems 1/3 in the fall, but have never tried. The plant regenerates from its canes.
No.....Just cut off the dead wood as most hydrangea bloom on old wood.
Depends in your kind of Hydrangea, I've heard if you want big blooms next season, pruned it to 4-5" from the ground, if you don't mind smaller flowers but more of them, prune just the dead flowers....??
How do I get hydrangea to grow. I've planted them off & on for several years & they die. What is the trick to growing them?
They need to be in semi or mostly shade, never cut back more than 1/3 at a time and keep the dead blooms removed. They love to keep moist, do not let get too dry. If you want to change the color of the flower slightly, you can add iron to the soil. Keep well mulched and use fertilizer in the spring and fall.
