I have divided mine all times of the year when it wasn't frozen ;) I prefer to do it when the leaves up are completely so that I can see how big they are and so I know how much I want and where. I dig out the entire clump and then just chop the roots in half with a shovel. This has always worked great for me.

Hostage are my favorite plant. They can be grown in full shade to full Sun. I divide mine any time in the Spring through early Fall as needed. Some of my plants date back to grandpa and mother and now have over 2000 plants from dividing over the years.

I too love Hostas, but I cannot seem to find the variety that we had when I was little -- the flowers on the cultivars I have now have NO fragrance at all -- but the ones I grew up with had a wonderful scent - and were nearly always full of bees! Very plain leaves, not particularly 'fancy' plant like modern variety ... do you have the name for any that have scent?

Hostas are hardy and easy to divide. Can be done with a shovel, pick, saw or whatever is sharp. They really can be divided anytime but getting to them in the spring makes them easier to handle.
