How to drain the back yard when it rains?

My back yard is low and fills up during a rain. I have gutters but they don't work right. I could dig a trench, bury a drain pipe or slope the yard by adding dirt. Which is best way and cheapest way. House was built in 1972. Any ideas are more than welcome. I am 77 years old FYI.
Thanks Dell

French drain all the way around the slope

  • Why are your gutters not working? Are they clogged? Where do they drain to? I agree about the french drain, I had to do that myself. I hired out the work though.

What about a rain barrel ? Have the downspouts drain into them. Eco friendly and water for any plants or gardens you might have.

Water barrel will work to empty gutters, if you can fix them..Clean them and see that they are angled toward the barrel. A hose can be attached to the bottom and the collected water is great for foundation flowers or otherwise plantings that are within reach of the hose. BUT...the rain water that does not hit you roof to be drained into gutter and water barrel is the portion that needs the French Drain.. Check GOOGLE for a DYI or get it done professionally.

Faulty gutters will cause expensive damage to your home. Have them cleaned and repaired. Then if you can find a landscaper they should be able to address the poor drainage issue. Beware of the many gardeners who do nothing but mow, they may not know how to fix the drainage problem.
