How can I improve the soil of an already existing flower garden?

The soil in my flower garden has a lot of clay in it. Unfortunately I started it several years ago and did not amend the soil. Is there anything I can do now to help improve it? Will I need to dig up all of the things that are already there?

If the plants are growing ok then leave them and work around amending the soil with Garden soil ,Peatmoss,Gypsum And Lime.Carefully work into the soil with a small hand trowel.

Thank you so much! I'm going to try to do some areas that I haven't planted yet!

If your plants are well established I would leave them and work some mushroom compost into the ground around them. You can use mushroom compost in place of potting soil or garden soil. I have find the mushroom compost at Lowe's or Walmart for very reasonable price. The brand I use is Black Velvet.

I agree with the comments about if the plants are doing well leave them alone. I have a rather large mostly perennial garden I like to add to every spring. My dirt is so much clay I could start a pottery business. I always when I plant something new dig out a bit bit larger then necessary and use really good potting soil and fertilize really good where the new plant is going. Never had any trouble that way.
