Apply food grande diatomaceous earth with crush egg shells in the soil, and apply a horticultural oil on a regular basis.
I wanna know how to get rid of those terrible critters also!!!
I just use egg shells (we go though a lot of eggs in my house), and just pluck them off if one happens to cross the "moat" . . .
Depends on the size of your garden. Whatever size it is they will appear so the best way is to walk the garden, and spot them, pluck them off and feed them to the chickens, You will see where they have stripped a plant or two right away if you take a good look.
There are tiny wasps you can purchase to kill them, also. Its hard to wait for the to work, but they are effective.
I go out early in the morning and late in the evening (they are very active then) and pick them off. I try not to use any harsh chemicals.
