Bought a $3 chair that was painted with high gloss black paint. Just lightly sanded, gave it a spray can o f white primer and then sprayed with a soft white matte finish. Sanded the edges for a distressed look and put on a paste wax. Although not a true chalk paint technique, no one knows but me. It was just a little side chair that I also recovered with some fabric I had left over from a valance.
Yes you can layer chalk paint then distress to reveal the layers. One way to save paint and time is to paint the first paint color only on the areas you want to distress like edges and corners which would naturally show wear. Let those areas dry and completely paint piece with second color. Let dry. Using a sponge block sander distress the areas to show the the first paint color. Follow up with either a clear or dark wax depending on the look you are going for.
Chalk paint is really good for this application. I agree with the other suggestions. You can also check Pinterest or here on Hometalk for pictures as well as step-by-step instructions. I used Chalk Pint on an old wooden step ladder and used white for the areas I wanted to accent and then used a combination of colors to make a "wine" color for final color. At the end I dripped different colors of to imitate a well used ladder.
In addition to Pinterest there are many You Tubes that several techniques. You might watch Deb's Design Diary. She's quirky but very talented and lots of great ideas. Good Lick.
