Southern Traditions: Why Did My Grandmas Sweep Their Yards?
My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.

The solution for removing moss off roofs works well; your main issue is that there isn't enough air circulation there, either due to low growing bushes & or high tree coverage overhead. It will help if you 'open up the area' by pruning bushes/plants back & if you can't prune back any trees, have someone you know that can cut a few trees down to 'open the air space' so the area has a chance to dry out.
I'm in Oklahoma and we have the same issue. We do not have any type of plants/bushes against the north side of our house. We've power-washed and scrubbed and "treated" every square inch of the siding to no avail. It continues to get covered in mildew/algae/moss each year.
