lightly sand, clean prime with two coats of Kilz or Zinser with a foam brush allowing each coat to be totally dry. Paint and seal with a non-yellowing polycrylic giving it at least two coats.

We painted my daughter's kitchen which was all formica. As I recall, we wiped down with a NO SAND product. We used one coat of primer (probably Zinser which I prefer over Kilz) and 2 coast of enamel paint. Worked like a charm and withsides withstands kitchen wear and tear.

Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
