instead of removing cover it up with bead board or faux metal ceiling tiles.
I agree with Heidi! Covering up is easier than removing. Depending on the house style and you taste you can cover with just about anything. Bead board, ship lap, ceiling tiles, wood planks, 1/4" drywall made for the purpose, etc.
I have seen many DIY projects that suggest just covering them with ceiling tiles. I would imagine that you might need to drop the ceiling just a tad and then install whatever is necessary to keep the ceiling tiles in place.
