  • All fireplaces can be converted to gas log systems. Some easier then others. You need to provide a few things for the gas log system to be properly installed. Only hard iron pipe should be used through the bricks or ash pit door. Flex pipe is everyone's choice, but the heat generated can cause failure of pipe resulting in a fire. In addition in order to be code installed, there should be a gas turn off valve located within a few feet of the fireplace where you can view it when turning the gas on. This is not the valve that is on the end of the gas pipe, but one that has a remote valve located in the wall or floor adjacent to the fireplace log system. This allows you to safely turn off the gas when not around the fireplace to prevent an accident from someone trying to start the logs and not knowing what they are doing. The next thing you need to do is to install a clamp onto the flue damper inside the chimney. If you have a metal round damper that simply flips open and closed by moving a small metal rod, check the damper for a plug in a little round hole in the damper. Remove this round plug. If there is no plug or small hole in the damper, a small C clamp should be installed on the damper preventing the damper from closing all the way so flue gasses can properly escape when the logs are burning.
