Start with closing-off any points of entry to the house. Any openings need to be sealed or covered. Eliminate any weedy growth or vegetation close to the house. You can also purchase Ultrasonic devices. Otherwise, you will have to result to traps and poisons. We always had a outdoor cat to solve any mice problems.
  • Mice are a common problem in NJ. Food stuff should be sealed tight in plastic containers. This includes makeing sure your outside garbage cans are sealed and not stored next to house. Cutting back shrubs and branches which provide a natural hidding space for the critters is also suggested. Also keeping grass cut short works well. The use of glue traps are really the best method of prevention. Ultrasonic devices cost money to use, does not remove the pest and cannot always be placed where the point of entry is. However you should carefully seal all openings. This includes foam under all wall shingles where they end next to foundation. Caulk will work as well. Be sure that all openings that surround the house, such as wires, pipes, dryer vents are sealed tight. It only takes a 1/4 inch for these critters to get into the house.

Good advise about about closing any opening where they might get in, but we've found the best way to prevent them from getting in even after sealing, since they seem to find a way you might have missed, is to do this..... www.hometalk.com/diy/q-how-to-prevent-mice-in-my-house-30677
