Buy " weed-be-gone" from Ortho in the liquid form then mix to directions. spot spray on weeds with a small 1 gallon sprayer. Once the material dries it adheres to the plant making it impossible for the pet to get it on the pads of it's feet. I worked for a commercial lawn care company having many customers with pets, no issues ever came up.
Weed be gone is a selective herbicide killing just weeds not grasses, which may take additional applications for hard to kill weeds.
