What are the MSDS facts on the chemical 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol?

We are under a state of emergency for DO NOT USE WATER in our area due to the chemical above, which leaked into our river/water stations today. There was an odor as early as 9-10 am EST, but emergency notice only announced at 5 pm. Homeland Security, National Guard, and FEMA have been called in. Please, someone with knowledge, tell us what this chemical does. The effects are being downplayed, yet I read something alarmingly frightening. Would like professionals to respond!
Restaurants, daycares, schools all mandatorily closed. Grocery stores are on lock-down for people looting the shelves. It's real. Real scary.

Mdl281641 on Jan 10, 2014MSDS here: http://tinyurl.com/m974ntm While the MSDS may look alarming, I do not believe that this chemical is particularly harmful in trace quantities. The MSDS indicates actions to take if an individual is overcome by by contact with a large quantity of highly concentrated substance. This is not a chemical that will polymerize or initiate free radical processes - the things we are usually worried about with chemical exposure. I would think it would act much like rubbing alcohol: it is poisonous if you consume large doses of it and I wouldn't dunk my head in a bucket of it, but a drop in a gallon of water would go unnoticed. P.S. My Ph.D. is in Chemical Engineering from at top 20 university. Take from my comments what you will.Helpful Reply

Cynthia Colegrove on Jan 10, 2014The data sheet says it can cause respiratory problems. Be especially careful to not let children brush teeth, bath, etc. with it as they are prone to accidental ingestion and their lungs can't handle the things ours can. What troubles me is every one made a big deal about the chemical spill (rightfully so) but know cares about sodium fluoride which is WAY more poisonous. !!!!Helpful Reply
