Wow, this was tough.

My tree guy told me that my plum tree was trying to produce too much. It's a smallish tree with about 250 young plums. Branches are bending, and the tree would "sacrifice" its own growth the support all the fruit. And they'd be small because it's crowded. He said I actually needed to remove 80-90%! He promised that if you weight the total result after harvest, it'd be the same. It was SO hard to toss all that! At least it went to compost, so in a creepy cannibalistic way it'll get itself back later :-)

Douglas Hunt on Aug 22, 2011Awesome, Jay! And those plums are gorgeous. I hope you've made several of Marion Burros's justifiably famous plum tortes. The recipe was published in one form or another in The New York Times almost every year between 1983 and 1995 and I've made it dozens of times. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/21/dining/216frex.html
