Can't just widen a doorway by cutting the opening wider. You would need to replace the header and studs to the width you open it to.

Call a good contractor, these changes require permits in many communities. Make sure it's done correctly the first time.
Permits first if in a city. Then if you are going to tackle this you must find out if the wall the door is in is load bearing , if not just cut it out and frame it back it in. If it is, this is a whole new world and someone who knows about these things should be involved. The other thing to think about is when you do widen the door what is it going to do to your floor. Sometime just removing the door and framing and installing a slider could get you the answer.
