Does your bench have a cushion? Do you have a photo?
Does the bench already have an upholstered top? If so, save the original fabric and use that as a pattern for the new fabric. If you want to add an upholstered top, you'll need a piece of thin plywood, cut to fit the bench top, a piece of foam cut to the same size as the board, a piece of fabric staple gun. There are lots of tutorials here on Hometalk, as well as Pinterest. It's a really simple project.
If your bench has a cushion then take off the upholstery to use as a pattern & get you some fabric that is appropriate for upholstery then cut it out & staple it to your bench! If there is not an existing cushion then you will need a piece of foam, some batting, spray adhesive, fabric & a heavy duty stapler. Measure your bench top & get the appropriate size of foam & fabric to cover it. If it's odd sized then get a piece of that is large enough to cover the top & trim to size. Spray the top with adhesive & carefully place your foam onto the top of the bench. Lay two layers of batting over top & put a few staples down under the edge of the bench top to hold it in place. Cover with the fabric, get the fabric straight if there is a distinct pattern or if you want a certain part of the fabric centered then do that. Start at the center of one side, staple then do the opposite side then each end. Keep stapling from one side to the other & end to end. Keep the fabric taut but not pulling the fabric too much to prevent distortion of the pattern. Continue until it's completely stapled then trim off the excess fabric. Then enjoy your bench!
