It all depends what kind of wood is under the carpet. I removed beige carpeting in my living room (who does that) and found beautiful maple hardwood floors under it in good condition. Rented a vibrating sander, sanded the floor, and sealed it. Looks great. Pull up a corner of the carpet and see what is under there.
I've seen people do some pretty amazing things with sub flooring, but it would depend on the condition. Our sub floor was covered in dog pee stains when we bought the house, so we ended up putting laminate flooring. But I've seen DIY projects where they used a sharpie to add lines to make it look like a wood flooring, I've seen people just stain the wood so it looks like one solid sheet of wood. I've even seen projects where people have used stencils to make the floor look like tile.
If you want to make your sub floor look like a hardwood floor, try googling "makes a subfloor look like wooden planks." There are a lot of people who've done that and they've put out a lot of videos and step by step instructions.
