Pruning should be done after flowering has finished.
After blooming in the spring. When the flowers start to die.
The best times to prune azaleas are in the spring after they have bloomed or early summer. Do not prune them in late summer, as this will prevent it from blooming the next spring.

I have pruned mine in the early fall and they come back ok in the spring
