I would vacuum out every thing you can and clean it with a mixture of baking soda and water. Some swear by equal parts vinegar and water. If you are cleaning the outside only, you can't do better than TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate). It's the best thing out there for nicotine and soot. But follow the instructions on this website. They have other things to suggest as well. Hope that helps!

I did it once myself and used a shop vac to suck up the ash I couldn't sweep up then TSP. Now my chimney guy does it for me once a year in August or September before first use in the fall. I use the ashes for the plants when they need to be shoveled out.
