ugh! I never understand why people do that! I would sand the stained areas down, lightly sand the raw wood and then restain the whole thing. Particularly helpful if you consider a darker stain, if the color difference is still noticeable. You may need to go over the center area a second time to try and get them to match up better. Then seal with your preferred top coat.
I agree with GMA! As a former home builder a lot of builders did stuff like that to cut corners and cost. Of course I never did. Like covering up construction grade wood stairs with carpeting. Cheap builder grade cabinets with beautiful fronts, etc. Trying to match a stain color is almost impossible.
I don't understand why people do that. I hope you're able to make it beautiful! Wood floors deserve to be shown off!
Think your best bet is to start over...refinish the entire area...stain. Seal
I lived in a very old apartment building once. The owners sanded the wood floors down to a clean layer of wood then sealed it. It looked very fresh and elegant, brightened up an otherwise plain little apartment.
