Hi- do you have a structure you can hang it from? Or are you looking to build a swing stand?
I would like to hang it from the ceiling ideally.... how do i get to know if the patio ceiling is strong enough for me to hang the swing and to hold a person's weight ?
My suggestion: Do you have any of the 'house plans' that shows the structure in the area where you want your swing? IF you do...do you have access to the overhead area via a crawl space or attic? IF SO, utilize that information when it comes to placing the 'eye bolts' you will need. It's best to have 'an assistant' work with you; measure the length & depth of the swing, then with a pencil in-hand, mark where you will need to fasten the 'eye bolts' into the overhead-MAKING SURE that the 'eye bolts' will go through an 2x4 in the overhead existing structure...[make sure you leave enough room for the swing to 'swing' without hitting a wall or railing]. It's even better to place a 2nd piece of 2x4 above the one already there [for added stability]. Once you have drilled the holes through the double layer of 2x4's, you will need to slide your 'eye bolts' up through each hole [the assistant should be overhead with flat & locking washers & 2 nuts per bolt], your assistant should place the washers & 2 nuts on the end of each 'eye bolt' as you insert it into the hole. Have your assistant fasten the nuts [one at a time] down as tight as possible, then put the 2nd nut on & do the same. Repeat the process for the 2nd 'eye bolt' as well. Fasten your chain*from the swing to the 'eye bolts' & level it by adjusting the chain link in the 'eye bolt' [just as if this was a swing on a swing set]. * SOME 'eye bolts' require that you fasten the chain on BEFORE putting the 'eye bolt' through the overhead. HAPPY SWINGING!
