What do I use to paint aluminum siding?

I have a covered side porch with discolored, pitted aluminum siding. Is there a certain cleaner that will take off soot? Can I use regular outdoor paint? The area is mainly set back from the rest of the house, so I can paint it a different color. Has anyone cleaned and painted siding for cheap?

For good soot removal, you can't do better than TSP (tri sodium phosphate). As for the paint, you need Mobile Home paint and any paint dealer will be able to set you up. But beware...once you make a clean spot the rest of your place will want to look just as new!!

TSP is definitely the go to for cleaning. I like duramax for paint by Valspar. More expensive than plain paint but goes on without primer and has enough elasticity to expand and contract with weather change. No splits cracks or peeling.

We redid a shed a while back at our previous home.. we cleaned it with TSP then painted it with regular white outdoor paint, It looked so good!!

Thank you Bobbie! I forgot about TSP. I think I even have some!
