My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
Dampen a rag with mineral spirits once the majority of the rust is gone. Scrub the fence with the rag and mineral spirits to remove any remaining rust and residue from the fence, switching to a clean rag as needed.
my mom painted the chain link fence with silver paint. Just use a small roller and have it on a mop handle, and it goes on quickly. You can even paint the other side by using the roller and handle and reaching down over the top. If you use a thicker nap roller, it even catches the edges of the fencing.
Just know that in some cities (Detroit), you actually only 'own' one fence-either the east side or the west side. Maybe talk to your neighbor to make sure there are no problems later. the other side might look odd with only the edges having silver paint if they don't want you to paint it. No need to make enemies with those who live next door.
