I can tell you what has not worked for us. The spray popcorn ceiling repair didn't match the texture of our ceilings. Textured brush-on paint did not match the color of the ceiling, and was much flatter in height, plus it made a huge mess. Plain old white spray paint just dislodged more of our popcorn and made the rest look dirty. If you have water stains or stains from mysterious accidents (Coca-Cola shaken and sprayed by a 13-year-old!), you may have to live with it or call a professional. UNTIL you or someone else can remove those popcorn ceilings and replace them, you do have a problem. But you have some options to try. Best wishes!

Buy a tub of premade spackle . Apply with a sea sponge and dab the area until you get the effect you want. It may take a while. Let one coat dry before doing another. We did this to create a popcorn ceiling because our ceiling was so uneven. Have also done to fix water leaks and changing of light fixtures.

Agree. Did same. Not exactly popcorn, more like faux plaster. Applied first with a drywall blade.

You are in a tough spot. We were in the same situation and tried and tried and tried. We were told by several professionals that it was one of the hardest things to do and no one would promise that it would look like the rest of the ceiling. Most people sand the popcorn off. We just redid the whole ceiling. It looks OK. I'm not impressed with it but with all the time I spent on it, it's good enough. Good luck.
