small holes for drainage. several @1/4 inches. put stones or something like landscape cloth in the bottom to keep everything in and the cage is fine.

I put Dryer sheets in the bottom of pots. it keeps the hole from choking and lets it drain
I'd say half-inch holes should do the trick!
