LOL @ "buffet line". I had the most beautiful lettuce growing, I went out one morning yo get a head and everyone had been chewed off. I ended up putting chicken wire around my garden.

Sprinkle chili powder or cayenne pepper around the plants. Critters don't like that, but you have to reapply often due to rain & watering washes it away.

I would avoid the pepper around small mammals. If it gets on their paws they could wipe the eyes and transfer the pepper. Try growing milkweed. The butterflies will thank you.

Break up a bar of Irish Spring soap and scatter the pieces around your plants. Like me, deer hate the smell and will stay away. Might deter some of the other free moochers, as well.

animals love to eat and they are like most humans....fast,and easy...I would fence the garden with deer fencing ...then a scare crow with aluminum plates that move in the wind....anything resembling human movement scares them.....also place a post with a mechanical owl that uses batteries to move it's head....small animals will stay away from that...also dollar store rubber snakes placed in visible locations can help...real snakes eat small animals...mice...and birds...who wants to be potential dinner?
