To get rid of the ceiling 1. in sections, spray ceiling with water. 2. take a scraper (smooth edge) and scrape being careful not to gouge. To put on the finish of either orange peel or knockdown
Cover or move all your furniture out of the room. Take a spray bottle of water and spray a portion of the ceiling. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then take something and scrape off very gently (it just falls away). We used a Sheetrock mud trowel that worked well. We've covered all our ceilings in brocade. I wanted to leave our ceiling smooth but couldn't because of the age of our house (Sheetrock seams have begun to show) It's not a difficult job. Good luck.
PLEASE take a sample of the material to be removed to a local lab for asbestos
before you start the project for real! My ceilings (house built ca. 1970) tested
at 3 % asbestos! That's HIGH! Asbestos is not terribly dangerous unless the
tiny fibers are released into the air. When wet, it stays largely dormant. A must
is to wear protective clothing, eye protection and a filter mask. If asbestos is
high, as it often is in construction on-site mixed materials (the stuff that was
sprayed on the ceilings) in homes built more than + - 30 years ago, hire profess-
sionals or leave it be.
We filled a one gallon garden pump sprayer with plain water, then sprayed a 3x3 area lightly. Let it sit for about 30-45 seconds and then scrape with a large scraper. Be sure to remove everything from the room and cover the floors well. Also use eye protection and cover your hair. It is a very messy job, but the water keeps the dust down somewhat.
