How do I paint a carved plaque without painting the letters?

Hello, I have an oak stained wooden plaque with a phrase carved in it. The lettering is black. I would like to paint it a light color but keep the lettering black. I know there are products that protect the wood while allowing you to paint the carving, but is there something to do the opposite? TIA

Use a q tip to coat the lettering with vaseline. The vaseline will not allow the paint to stick as you paint the rest of the piece. Wipe off the vaseline and the lettering should be fine.

And use a Qtip and a tiny paint brush to paint in and around the lettering. If the dark lettering needs a touch up after you wipe off the Vasolene, use an almost dry paint brush. Less is more. But the Vasolene will probably add enough cleaning and polish to look good. Best wishes!

Thanks! I should have thought of that!
