How do I best cover an uneven stucco fireplace?

I have a plain stucco fireplace that is uneven that goes from floor to ceiling. It has a stucco surround on the opening for the fire box that does not provide enough space for an actual mantle. I would also like to integrate a mantle. Help.

Is this a picture of what you want to cover? How about making your own like these Hometalkers did?

That's lovely, and I appreciate your response. I'm not sure if I want it that traditional.

I am not sure what you mean by uneven. However, you could easily be able to have some sort of mantle attached on top of the little surround that you have. Whatever your style, rustic wood, painted wood, etc.

I am also a little lost on your 'uneven' meaning. Do you mean it is a textured stucco? Like the spanish interior stuccoes from the 70's?

If this is what you are meaning, I would chisel and sand down the bumps and apply new stucco to desired smoothness.

As for a mantle, I would just use the current bump-out and place a mantle on the top of it, or seeing as it appears to be a plain wall above anchor a floating mantle at desired height.

Debbie, it's really beautiful but it's yours and you want a mantle. Heres what I will suggest get a piece of wood that looks very organic , have it professionally installed and place over the top of your existing mantle for support. Almost like a floating shelf but incorporating the present mantle. That's why I say to have it professionally installed it is a large piece of wood. Maybe you can have it hollowed out so the weight is less. Plus a pressional can or should be able to patch the stucco if it should crack.
