Wool is a great carpet for a high traffic area. one thing to make a wool carpet last longer is to use a good pad underneath it. Since wool typically wears out from the bottom first (the knots rubbing against the floor below), a good pad will help extend the life of the carpet.
If you can live without carpet, go for wood, laminate, ceramic, stone, or other material in high traffic areas. It may be cheaper than patching a beautiful carpet. Once cleaned, the carpet is never quite the same. Just my opinion. Best wishes.
I love wool carpet and Michele is correct, the padding does matter.
Think about your lifestyle. Kids, pets, snow, mud? Is your family tidy, do they spill things, crayons, play doh, silly pitty, slime in your life? All things to consider.
Is anyone older that may need the softer surface or the better traction carpet gives great. Can also be a tripping hazard for some people too.
If you will yank out the fancy dancy carpet cleaner the minute someone spills a glass of water, I would reconsider.
I can see pros and cons either way, but it is your house and you should get what you want and be happy!
